Yoga: The Path To Holistic Health
: Around the world, increasing numbers of people are turning to yoga as a means of keeping fit and reducing stress. In this comprehensive and highly illustrated guide
B.K.S. Iyengar, the world's leading teacher of yoga, shares his unique, holistic approach. For
Iyengar, yoga is more than just a form of exercise; it is a holistic experience that benefits the body, mind, and spirit. He outlines the philosophy and ideals behind this ancient practice and explains how yoga can help to counter the stresses of modern living. Designed for every level of ability, age, and physical condition, there are detailed instructions for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. Anatomy of Hatha Yoga: A Manual for Students, Teachers, and Practitioners
:Anatomy of Hatha Yoga is the only modern authoritative source that correlates the study of hatha yoga with anatomy and physiology. Hatha yoga is comprised of stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises in upright, lying down and inverted postures. Yoga teachers and students, personal trainers, medical therapists, or anyone who is curious or troubled about how the body responds to stretching and exercise will find in this book a cornucopia -- partly new and partly old -- of readable and reliable information. It was written and edited to meet the needs of a general audience largely unschooled in the biomechanical sciences, and yet to attract and challenge the interests of the medical profession. This book features 230 black and white photographs and
more than 120 diagrams and anatomical illustrations. |

Dancing the Body of Light
: Dancing the Body of Light is the title of the book that Dona has brought out with her student and fellow yoga teacher, Orit
Sen-Gupta. Together they have explored the past and present stages of yoga and offer in this ambitious manuscript a way that the art of yoga can continue to develop in the future. Perfect pose, empty mind, and wide heart are at the basis of this development, in which all the aspects of the human being are brought together into one organic whole. This was undoubtedly the aim of the ancient yogi's, but as happens to all traditions, at a certain moment in history the descriptions take the place of reality, the vehicle to arrive at life becomes more important than life itself. The book "Dancing the Body of Light: the Future of
Yoga", aims at refreshing old concepts and giving them a new, modern look. |
Raja-Yoga
:By Swami Vivekananda, Raja-Yoga, the path of meditation and control of the mind, gives a scientific treatment of Yoga philosophy describing methods of concentration, psychic development and the liberation of the soul from bondage of the body.
Rja-Yoga also includes Swami Vivekananda's translation and commentary of the "Yoga Aphorisms of
Patanjali." Raja-Yoga, along with Swami Vivekananda's Karma-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, and
Jnna-Yoga, are considered classics and outstanding treatises on Hindu philosophy. The Swami's deep spiritual insight, fervid eloquence, and broad human sympathy shine forth in these works and offer inspiration to all spiritual seekers. |
Yoga
: Yoga’s 5,000-year tradition is rich and varied, and has always evolved to meet the needs of the culture it serves. Ever increasing numbers of people come to the practice and encounter its many benefits: the union of opposites; an understanding of the effect of the outside world on the body; a significant reduction in stress; a path to liberation; and the discovery of one’s true self. Above all else, yoga has been and continues to be about the process of transformation. Linda Sparrowe discusses yoga’s roots in the sacred texts and provides a look at the 20th-century yogis who brought it to the West — Swami Sivananda
Saraswati, Indra Devi, and B. K. S. Iyengar, to name a few.

Ashtanga Yoga: The Definitive Step-By-Step Guide to Dynamic Yoga
: I highly recommend this book. It is absolutely wonderful. It demonstrates all the steps exactly, and helped me between weekly classes for beginners. The book made everything the instructor explained simple and clear, and the excellent photographs show the steps I forgot in the first classes. The book is helpful on many levels, and can help each person wherever they are in their Ashtanga Yoga practice. The explanations ring with clarity. What a wonderful gift John Scott has offered the yoga student. (Reviewer: Jean Thami from Columbus, OH USA) |
Improve Your Golf With Yoga Techniques
: There is no doubt that the method in this book brings results. I congratulate the authors for skillfully using the techniques of yoga in the service of playing better golf. It's great to have exercises to warm-up physically and focus mentally. All the exercises are directly beneficial to improving the game, especially because they are well-explained and illustrated. The reader can implement them right away and feel the results. As a yoga student interested in learning golf, rather than intimidated by such a daunting sport, I feel more confident and encouraged to play because of the techniques in this book. Thanks especially to Stefani Pappas whose joy, energy, and enthusiasm come through the printed pages so effectively. (Reviewer: A reader from
Asuncion, Paraguay, South America.) |
Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief
: I purchased this book when it was first published, and I still use it today. My first copy was so well used, I recently purchased a new copy (it would be great to have a spiral bound). I've experienced back pain for over 15 years. Doctors suggested surgery, which I declined. I've seen over a dozen chiropractors over the past decade, some seemed to help, some did not. As I do not expect any doctor to "cure" my
backpain, neither do I expect this or any book to "cure" it. What I have learned from this book has helped me to help myself. I have improved my posture, greatly reduced my
backpain, and have begun taking yoga classes. I'd like to thank the author for writing this very helpful book, and I look forward to any new titles
that may be released by Mary Pullig Schatz in the future. (Reviewer: A reader from NYC). |
Yoga for Children
:This book is well-written, and approaches yoga at a good level for kids. The authors have selected a good variety of movements, and presented them in a format that make them accessible to kids. There is a mixture of easy and not-so-easy positions, and instructions for how to start simple and get more advanced as the child progresses. There is also ample instruction for the adult who is overseeing their practice. I haven't had a lot of exposure to yoga myself, but I got enough information from the book that (with a little preparatory work on my part) I felt confident in knowing how to get them in the right position while watching out for any problems. (Reviewer: A reader from Houston, TX USA). |
Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: There was yoga before the time of Patanjali but it was not written down, or at least no text survives. We find elements of the practice in the Upanishads and of course in the Bhagavad
Gita. But before Patanjali's codification there was no systematic text to guide the aspirant. Since then Patanjali's sutras have been translated into many languages along with commentary to elucidate the concise text, with Vyasa's commentary from the ninth century--upon which Iyengar makes some reliance--being the most important. SoCal). |
